She and Him – the best music I ever heard

I have been listening to alternative music choices lately, including bands like Relient K, The Naked and Famous and College, but one that I’ve stuck with for a long time now is beautiful She and Him.

Zooey Deschanel and Matt Ward work together on making the most romantic, bittersweet music, I ever heard.

The lyrics are often sad and melancholic but sung with such happiness and calm joy that it makes every bad thing in life seem like nothing.

It’s like a hyena pooping rainbows! Pure magic!

Listen to the angelic sound of Zoey, singing about lost love and hurt. It’s simply mesmerizing.

On their own homepage it says – quite rightfully:

“She & Him make music for an eternal springtime, when the temperature is warm enough to go riding with the top rolled down and the radio turned up. They occupy an alternate universe where the saddest of songs feel as warm as sun showers; the rain may be coming down, but somewhere nearby, everything looks bright.”

To me, this is some of the best music, because you get to really digest the fact that yeah, things may look dull some times, and might not go your way, but hey! Life goes on, and if you show the world your best smile, that’s what you’ll get in return. Even on rainy days!

Do you know any awesome, powerful, romantic or cool bands?

Reaching a milestone – the cons and pros

“Me and my new graduation hat”

I get very sentimental these days, because this Monday I reached a milestone. I graduated Danish Gymnasium which is the equivalent of US college (a preparation for further education).

To me, it wasn’t that hard. I had it easy, compared to others, I always talked in class, didn’t care if chatting with teachers made me unpopular

But now I stand here, and I’m wearing my beautiful red and white hat and I feel so alone.

There’s no money for me, coming from the government, there’s no one waiting for me every morning, telling me about famous artists, authors, scientists, talking intensely about Freud or Mahler or that one weird scientist with all the white hair.

I have to be serious now, I have to do things on my own, I have to go find a job.

My decision was to take a year off and earn money. I’m not so sure anymore, but I know that I have people there to grab me when I fall.

But I also know that I don’t want to fall. I want to stand on my own, walk on my own.

I am not a baby any more.

And that’s what’s so weird about reaching these dates, these milestones.

  1. You feel so utterly free
  2. You feel so horribly caged – no one is there to help you
  3. You are on your own

And that’s what frightens me the most.

Just because I’m losing, doesn’t mean I’m lost

You might be a big fish
In a little pond
Doesn’t mean you’ve won
‘Cause along may come
A bigger one
And you’ll be lost

Every river that you tried to cross
Every gun you ever held went off

– Coldplay – “Lost”

I swear by God

I swear by myself and God,
If he exists,
That I will never do such things again,
As I once swore, by my mother’s life,
That I would never do it.

It was still early spring,
And I didn’t know,
What I know today,
What a small thing could do.

Now summer has past,
And autumn shows me what I’ve done,
I am terrified,
Of myself.

Do you know, what man is capable of?
Of all things, man can do,
Bringing hurt is one,
And no amount of comfort can change that.

When a vase breaks, you can glue it back together,
But you will always see the cracked edges.

And for that, I am sorry

Aside

An important realization

Today  I realized, that it doesn’t matter what you are good at or have the easiest time doing – it only matters what you want to do. So what if you parents want you do be a lawyer? If you feel like being a basketball player, go for it!

Always be, what you want to be – not what others wish for

Never be gullible, but always open minded

There is a hurt soul behind every spiteful remark – never forget that

Do not take anything for granted; someday it might not be there anymore

Always be proud of what you are and have become, not of all things you didn’t manage to do – those must not be your purpose

If you feel like writing stories or driving a school bus, go for it!

There is nothing out there, which wastes your talents – other than not doing, what you want to do with your life.

Literary Quotes

Because of lack of personal inspiration, I thought I would try and look up famous writers’ quotes to see what they say about writing and books and literature, and I learned a thing or two.

Here are the ones I chose, feel free to comment and suggest more quotes, because I love all those quotes which make you think about things!

Oscar Wilde
“The difference between literature and journalism is that journalism is unreadable and literature is not read.”

Johann Wolfgang von Goethe
“The decline of literature indicates the decline of a nation.”

Jean-Paul Sartre
“If literature isn’t everything, it’s not worth a single hour of someone’s trouble.”

Aldous Huxley
“Every man’s memory is his private literature.”

Robert Louis Stevenson
“The difficulty of literature is not to write, but to write what you mean; not to affect your reader, but to affect him precisely as you wish.”

Charles Dickens
“A day wasted on others is not wasted on one’s self.”

“A person who can’t pay gets another person who can’t pay to guarantee that he can pay. Like a person with two wooden legs getting another person with two wooden legs to guarantee that he has got two natural legs. It don’t make either of them able to do a walking-match.”

“An idea, like a ghost, must be spoken to a little before it will explain itself.”

“Have a heart that never hardens, and a temper that never tires, and a touch that never hurts.”

Anne Bronte
“But he that dares not grasp the thorn Should never crave the rose.”

“There is always a “but” in this imperfect world.”

Charlotte Bronte
“Give him enough rope and he will hang himself.”

“I am no bird; and no net ensnares me; I am a free human being with an independent will.”

“I’m just going to write because I cannot help it.”

“Look twice before you leap.”

Emily Bronte
“I’ll walk where my own nature would be leading: It vexes me to choose another guide.”

“Proud people breed sad sorrows for themselves.”

J. R. R. Tolkien
“If more of us valued food and cheer and song above hoarded gold, it would be a merrier world.”

“It’s the job that’s never started takes longest to finish.”

“Not all who wander are lost.”

“Still round the corner there may wait, A new road or a secret gate.”

We are lemmings

Know the saying “Swim with the stream”?As in fish. I like that saying. That we’re all just a bunch of fish following each other because it’s easier and safer.

Of course there will always be people swimming in the other direction, and I like to think that I am one of those on certain occasions, but psychologically speaking, we are born to belong in groups, and therefore we are a product of said group, wishing to fit in, because it is hard to survive alone (evolutionary psychology anyone?)

But I like another saying better. I like to say that we are like lemmings. Lemmings are rodents. They are like mice and such, but their behaviour is strange.

This I found on Wikipedia (it is, in fact, very true):

“Driven by strong biological urges, some species of lemmings may migrate in large groups when population density becomes too great. Lemmings can swim and may choose to cross a body of water in search of a new habitat. In such cases, many may drown if the body of water is so wide as to stretch their physical capability to the limit. This fact combined with the unexplained fluctuations in the population of Norwegian lemmings gave rise to the myth.”

The myth spoken about here is the believe that lemmings would commit mass suicide, which is, of course, not true. But when they migrate they all move like one organism. If the lemming in front chooses to swim across a very big “body of water”, say, a lake or a small ocean, then all the others will automatically follow.
Frankly, just like we humans do.

~~~~~~~~~~>> {***************} <<~~~~~~~~~~
I’m not saying it’s a horrible thing, we humans walking together like an organism, making our way in the world together rather than by ourselves.
I’m just stating that this is how we are, and we have to learn to accept that, because we are born to live together, hunt together, protect each other and help each other, because we are weak when we are many alone and strong when one.
And even though this is what I say, I’m not by that claiming it to be the only reality, but my humble opinion.
What is yours? What are we born to do?
